In a video published on the 10th of March, Owen Jones lambasted the monarchy as an institution of racism and called for its end.
Socialist writer and political commentator Owen Jones has been a vocal advocate for the abolition of the monarchy once again in his new Twitter video, which called for the monarchy to be abolished as it was “riddled with racism”.
It's time to abolish the monarchy.https://t.co/HEJcrRL9vr pic.twitter.com/1nezqTvMeX

In the video, Jones asked the question: “What does it say about an institution which drives a woman to the brink of suicide because of the colour of her skin?”
He went on to link the Meghan Markle saga to that of Prince Andrew, whereby he suggests there was a vendetta against one and the other was protected and honoured, regardless of links between Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein.
Jones continued his argument against the institution of the Royal Family by asking: “What does it say about an institution which leaks allegations of bullying against Meghan, in the run-up to an interview which is going to be very damaging to that institution, then launches an inquiry into them?”
The Royal Family had committed to investigating bullying claims made by staffers of the Duchess, who claimed that her behaviour had driven out two members of staff. As was reported in The Times, Buckingham Palace commented:
“We are clearly very concerned about allegations in the Times following claims made by former staff of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Accordingly, our HR team will look into the circumstances outlined in the article. Members of staff involved at the time, including those who have left the Household, will be invited to participate to see if lessons can be learned. The Royal Household has had a Dignity at Work policy in place for a number of years and does not and will not tolerate bullying or harassment in the workplace.”
Jones went on to cite statistics published by “Republic”, an anti-monarchy organisation claiming that, out of the £127 billion that tourism brings to the country, only £500 million is related to the Royal Family. This, Jones said, defeats the argument used by those who “support the Royal Family, but not enthusiastically”.
In rounding up the claims in his video, Jones stated that “we could tell the world that we are genuinely, finally, a proper, healthy democracy”.
His comments on the monarchy were not met without criticism. For example:
Absolutely not. Too many untruths in that interview.

Jones finished his video by calling for a Head of State who is “accountable to us”.
