The Mayor of Liverpool has today been arrested by the police.
The Labour Mayor was arrested this afternoon alongside four other men, according to Sky News.
Joe Anderson, the Mayor of Liverpool, was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit bribery and witness intimidation. Merseyside Police made the arrest.
A Liverpool City Council spokesperson said: “Liverpool City Council is co-operating with Merseyside Police in relation to its ongoing investigation. We do not comment on matters relating to individuals.”
According to a statement released by Merseyside Police, “those arrested have been taken to police stations across Merseyside, where they will be questioned by detectives”.
In addition to the arrest of Mr Anderson, 4 other men aged between 25 and 72 were also arrested and are in police custody.
TalkRadio host Mark Dolan said: “The mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, has been arrested along with four others in a police probe … it’s quite an extraordinary story. They were related to offences of bribery and witness intimidation, in part to an investigation into a building and development contracts in Liverpool. These are just allegations at this moment in time, however, the optics of that are quite extraordinary.
